Rock lights have become one of the most popular lighting upgrades for off-road trucks and overland builds. Traditionally mounted around the wheel wells, they provide useful illumination around the tires while completely changing how a truck looks after dark.

But there's a limitation to the traditional approach:

Bright wheel wells don't necessarily mean good lighting around the entire truck.

That's where full-perimeter lighting takes a different approach.


What Are Traditional Rock Lights?

Traditional rock-light systems typically place compact LED lights inside or around the four wheel wells, sometimes with additional lights underneath the center of the vehicle.

They're great for illuminating tires, suspension components and nearby terrain.

The problem is that the underside of a truck is full of obstacles—frame rails, axles, fuel tanks, skid plates, exhaust systems and suspension components can all block light.

This can create extremely bright areas directly around the lights while leaving other parts of the truck in darkness.

The solution isn't always more light.

Sometimes it's better placement.


What Is Full-Perimeter Lighting?

Full-perimeter lighting looks at the entire vehicle instead of concentrating primarily on the wheel wells.

Rather than asking:

“Where can we mount these lights?”

We start with:

“Where does this truck actually need light?”

Lighting positions can then be selected around the vehicle to work together as a complete system—illuminating the sides, underneath the chassis, around the front and rear, and near the tires.

The goal is simple:

More usable light. Fewer shadows. Better coverage.

This doesn't mean traditional rock lights are bad.

It means how you use the lights matters just as much as the lights themselves.


Why Placement Matters

One of the biggest misconceptions with rock lights is that adding more lights automatically creates better coverage.

If eight lights leave dark areas, it's easy to assume you need twelve. If twelve aren't enough, maybe you need sixteen.

But a brighter light can't illuminate through a frame rail.

Strategically changing where that light is positioned can sometimes improve coverage more than simply adding another light.

That's why we approach vehicle lighting with a simple philosophy at ADV:

Why Vehicle-Specific Mounting Matters

Universal rock-light kits have to work on thousands of different vehicles.

That means the manufacturer can't determine exactly where every light should mount on your Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner or Power Wagon.

The installer is usually left to figure it out using available holes, self-tappers, drilling, zip ties or improvised brackets.

A vehicle-specific system allows us to reverse that process.

We can study the vehicle first, determine where light is actually needed, identify secure mounting points, and design brackets that position the lights accordingly.

Instead of engineering the system underneath your truck during installation, the engineering has already been done for you.

This is exactly what led ADV Designs to develop Shadow Eliminator™.

We didn't want to put another set of rock lights into a box.

1. Poor or inconsistent light placement.
