Why Are the Shadow Eliminator™ Fender Lights Magnetic?
One of the most common questions we get about the Shadow Eliminator™ system is:
Why are the fender lights magnetic instead of permanently bolted to the truck?
The short answer is simple: because we tested both—and for this specific location, magnetic mounting worked better.
Shadow Eliminator wasn't designed around what looked best sitting in the shop. The mounting locations were developed through actual off-road use, including crawling, high-speed terrain, suspension articulation, and jumping.
Here's why we ended up with the system we use today.
The Problem With Hard-Mounted Fender Lights
Before developing Shadow Eliminator, we tested several different locations and mounting methods for wheel-well lighting.
Mounting the lights farther underneath the truck protected them from the tires, but introduced another problem:
Shadows.
The farther inward we moved the lights, the more the tires, suspension, frame, and other components blocked the light.
Moving the lights outward dramatically improved coverage, especially on trucks running wider tires and aggressive wheel offsets.
But that created a new problem.
A hard-mounted light and a fully stuffed tire don't get along.
During heavy suspension articulation, a tire can travel deep into the fender well. We learned firsthand that hard-mounted lights in these locations could be hit by the tire.
And when something has to give, it isn't always the light.
We've torn up hard-mounted fender lights and caused damage to the surrounding fender-well material in the process.
So instead of continuing to fight the problem by making the mount stronger, we changed the way we approached it.
Why We Chose Magnetic Fender Lights
For this specific application, we intentionally wanted the light to be able to move.
Shadow Eliminator positions the fender lights farther outward, where they can provide better illumination around the tire and reduce the heavy shadows we experienced with more centrally mounted lights.
Rather than permanently attaching the light at that vulnerable location, we use a strong magnetic mounting system.
If the tire does manage to contact the light, the light can move instead of transferring that force directly into the fender liner or mounting structure.
Move it back into position and keep going.
It's a simple solution to a problem we repeatedly encountered with hard-mounted setups.
But Do the Magnets Actually Hold Off-Road?
This was obviously one of our biggest concerns during development.
So we tested it.
Our original setup has been running for more than two years, including:
- Rock crawling
- High-speed off-road driving
- Whoops
- Heavy suspension articulation
- Jumping
- Normal street and trail use
We've never had a magnetic fender light simply fall off during normal use.
When articulating the suspension, we've also found that the tire generally travels upward and tucks inward into the fender, allowing it to pass the location of the magnetic light.
And in the situations where a tire does make contact?
The light can move. Put it back where it belongs and continue.
That's exactly what we wanted it to do.
How Do They Actually Mount?
This varies slightly depending on the vehicle because Shadow Eliminator is designed around each specific platform.
When a vehicle already provides a suitable metal mounting surface, we'll take advantage of it and mount the magnetic light directly to that location.
When it doesn't, ADV provides the mounting surface.
For example, the 3rd Gen Toyota Tundra uses small ADV-designed metal tabs that attach using the truck's factory fender hardware.

The magnetic light then attaches directly to the metal tab.

Other platforms may require a longer metal strip that utilizes multiple existing fender fasteners.

The exact bracket may change from vehicle to vehicle, but the design philosophy remains the same:
Use the factory mounting structure whenever possible, position the light where it provides the best coverage, and allow the light itself to move if the tire ever reaches it.
Why Not Just Move the Lights Inward?
We could.
It would also defeat part of the reason Shadow Eliminator exists.
Moving the fender lights farther toward the center of the truck makes them easier to protect—but it also allows the tire and suspension to block more of their output.
We developed Shadow Eliminator around coverage first.
That means putting each light where it can actually do its job rather than simply choosing the easiest mounting location.
For the fender lights, that means getting them outward.
And after testing both permanent and magnetic mounting methods, magnetic mounting proved to be the better solution for that particular location.
Designed From Real-World Testing
Not every mounting location on Shadow Eliminator is magnetic.
We use magnetic mounting where it provides a specific advantage. Other lights throughout the system use purpose-built, bolt-on mounting solutions.
That's an important distinction.
The magnetic fender lights aren't there because we couldn't figure out how to hard mount them.
They're magnetic because we did hard mount them—and learned why we shouldn't.
After more than two years of testing, the solution has survived everything from crawling and articulation to high-speed whoops and jumping without a light simply falling off.
And if a stuffed tire ever does reach one?
Let the light move—not your fender.
